About WhatCanWe.org

WhatCanWe.org™ started in 2012 to raise awareness and funds for licensed, nonprofit animal rescues in order to help offset the financial hardships most currently endure due to overwhelming veterinary expenses. Fortunately, there is an army of benevolent rescue organizations that are on the front lines battling every day in an effort to positively change these numbers.
WhatCanWe.org is determined to change this situation by raising awareness and funds to offset these costs, and ultimately, to create nonprofit teaching veterinary clinics that offer low or no-cost veterinary care to licensed, nonprofit rescues.
Recipes Needed for New Fundraising Cookbook to Benefit WhatCanWe.org™

Westlake Village, Calif. - February 12, 2013 – WhatCanWe.org™, a new 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to reducing the impact of veterinary expenses on licensed, nonprofit rescue groups, kicked-off its “Kitchen Rescues, A Recipe Book People and Their Pets” campaign and announced that renowned New York designers Alex Papachristidis and Fruzsina Keehn, along with their treasured pooches and favorite recipes, have committed to participate in the project. Mr. Papachristidis has been making headlines for his recently released and highly acclaimed book, “The Age Of Elegance: Interiors by Alex Papachristidis.”

“’Kitchen Rescues’ is a unique opportunity for businesses and individuals to publish their recipes, gain visibility and most important, enable licensed rescues to save more animals by helping WhatCanWe.org defray exorbitant veterinary expenses,” said Beth Pattee, Co-founder of WhatCanWe.org. “We are actively seeking participants, their recipes and photos of their beloved animals locally and from across the country.”

This unique cookbook, catering to people and their pets, will include hundreds of recipes for human consumption and a section dedicated to pets. Kitchen Rescues will include at least 10 sections on everything from appetizers to desserts, as well as pet poetry, animal resources, famous quotations and sayings in lieu of weights and measures. The sections will be divided by heavy stock divider pages with each side featuring full-color photos of people and their pets taken by local photographers. Those purchasing divider pages will also receive a copy of the professional photo for their personal use. The recipe pages will feature a photo, caption, and recipe provided by those purchasing each page.

“We believe rescue groups and rescued animals deserve access to quality veterinary care at low or no cost to them,” said Beth Pattee, co-founder of WhatCanWe.org. “This cookbook, our major fundraiser for 2013, will provide critical funds for rescues enabling them to save more animals from euthanasia. In addition, it’s an opportunity to share stories of “Healing At Both Ends Of The Leash™”, where people and their pets have rescued each other and their rescue communities.”

Community members, businesses, chefs, home cooks, foodies, and pet lovers are invited to participate in the Kitchen Rescues by purchasing one or more recipe pages, divider pages, full-color covers, or advertisements of various sizes. A limited number of chapters are available to businesses, organizations or individual groups. In addition, pre-orders for the cookbook, which should be available in October 2013 are now being accepted. 100 percent of the funds raised by this book will benefit animals. To participate, contact beth@whatcanwe.org.

Since WhatCanWe.org™ started in part to help answer the question, “What can we do?, we are always looking for inspiring stories and ideas that can easily be replicated across the country to raise funds to help offset veterinary expenses for licensed, nonprofit rescues. Not only is this a great idea, but the story behind it is inspirational. We found this on the website of our affiliate PACC911.

A young girl, Ciara, started her own nonprofit organization called Pennies for Pups in 2007 after losing her Golden Retriever Dakota. Pennies for Pups was founded to help raise awareness, money, medication and food for sick, injured and abandoned dogs in local no kill animal shelters and foster care. As part of Pennies for Pups, Ciara started a “Paw Patrol” which helps stray or sheltered dogs find loving homes. Ciara and her family also provide foster care for Golden Retrievers through Rescue a Golden of Arizona while they await their new, loving forever homes.

Because of her efforts on behalf of shelter animals, Ciara received last year’s Prudential’s Spirit of Community Service Award for Arizona and won a trip to Washington, D.C. where she was presented her award from former First Lady Laura Bush at a gala ceremony in the Smithsonian Museum.

You can read Ciara’s story on her website: http://www.penniesforpups.com

Bob Ferber, Senior Trial Attorney, Animal Abuse Prosecution Team, L.A. City Attorney’s Office, Joins WhatCanWe.org’s Board

Westlake Village, Calif. - July 31, 2012 – WhatCanWe.org™, a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to reducing the impact of veterinary expenses on animal rescue groups, announced that Bob Ferber, Senior Trial Attorney, Animal Abuse Prosecution Team, L.A. City Attorney’s Office, joined its board of directors. WhatCanWe.org raises funds to offset licensed, nonprofit animal rescues’ veterinary costs, which often account for more than 50% of a rescue’s operating budget. By relieving rescues of this burden, the organization hopes to help save millions of animals from euthanasia in shelters.

“We are honored to have Mr. Ferber on our board,” said Beth Pattee, Co-founder and CEO of WhatCanWe.org. “His passion for helping animals and his experience in working with rescues will be a tremendous asset as we move closer to our goal.”

A graduate of the University of Columbia School of Law and Franklin & Marshall College and a 28 year veteran prosecutor of the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office, Bob Ferber has specialized in and supervised the city-wide prosecution of everything from prostitution, gangs and now animal welfare.

In 2002, Mr. Ferber persuaded the head City Attorney to form the Animal Protection Unit, the first team of prosecutors in the nation who specialize in animal abuse prosecutions. Soon after, Mr. Ferber was instrumental in the formation of the L.A. Animal Cruelty Task Force, the first dedicated team of LAPD detectives and animal control officers whose sole job is to investigate animal cruelty and neglect, including animal fighting, making Los Angeles the first city with a task force of both investigators and prosecutors that specialize in animal abuse and neglect. Mr. Ferber has led a team of prosecutors and investigators in prosecuting all forms of animal abuse, from animal fighting, violence against animals and domestic partners and horrible cases of animal neglect.

Mr. Ferber has a unique violence-prevention program called “Baron’s Buddies” where he uses handicapped and unwanted dogs, cats and rats to teach reverence for life and compassion for both animals and people. The program is now being developed into a teaching resource to be distributed to schools and libraries around the nation through a local nonprofit organization. Mr. Ferber speaks at conferences on behalf of the American Bar Association, the Animal Legal Defense Fund, law school conferences around the nation and has appeared on television and radio and in newspapers and magazines on issues ranging from gangs to animal welfare and was a technical advisor to the first ongoing training program of police in California who seek certification as animal cruelty investigators.

“Finding a way to alleviate veterinary expenses’ toll on rescue groups has the potential to save millions more animals,” said Mr. Ferber, Los Angeles’ senior trial attorney for the Animal Cruelty Prosecution Team.

While not at the office, Mr. Ferber helps other organizations rescue and place homeless dogs, cats and horses and also “rehabs” dogs with behavioral problems, especially ones with aggression issues. Bob also cares for his own menagerie of old, disabled and “unadoptable” dogs, cats and homeless rats at his home outside of Los Angeles.

WhatCanWe.org Aids Rescue Groups by Offsetting Veterinary Care Costs for Homeless Animals

Westlake Village, Calif. - April 16, 2012 – WhatCanWe.org™, a new 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to reducing the impact of veterinary expenses on licensed, nonprofit rescue groups, launched today. Inspired by the tragic loss of Christopher Myers, a young man who loved animals and served as a dedicated volunteer at L.I.F.E. Animal Rescue, the foundation creates and implements meaningful, easily replicated fundraising projects for animal rescues, individuals, and groups within communities. In addition, the foundation is working toward creating a nonprofit teaching veterinary clinic that offers low or no-cost veterinary care to licensed, nonprofit rescues.

“Today, every 1.5 seconds a homeless animal’s life is terminated in a shelter. That’s 40 animals every minute and nearly 2,400 animals each hour. The army of benevolent rescue organizations battling every day to positively change these numbers is severely hampered by exorbitant veterinary costs,” said Beth Pattee, Co-founder and CEO of WhatCanWe.org. “In Christopher’s memory, WhatCanWe.org is determined to change this situation by empowering caring individuals, groups and rescues throughout the United States with easily replicable programs that raise funds to offset these costs.”

WhatCanWe.org’s research shows that the cost of medical care for rescued, abandoned animals drains more than 50% of a rescue’s operating budget. This covers a diverse range of medical problems that occur before an animal is rescued including abandonment, abuse, accident, cruelty, injury, neglect, and undetected or untreated illnesses. Since most of these rescues rely solely on limited personal resources, compassionate community volunteers, and charitable donations, these costs have a staggering impact on a rescue’s ability to save more animals in need.

WhatCanWe.org’s innovative approach to replicable fund-raising includes a wide range of projects like its practical and inspirational book “Tails from L.I.F.E.,” which includes rescue tips and stories. This book was designed so that rescues across the nation can leverage it to economically raise funds. The first edition is expected to be available in November.
